Any auroras? Any good radio propogation, folks? I guess I should have sat on the left side of the airplane on my way to Europe yesterday. It's too overcast tonight in Southern Norway to see anything.
Given the amount of travel that you do, I take it you've seen auroras from the air before? On the way to Alaska several years ago, there was quite a show, which I would describe as dancing auroras. The ones I saw growing up in near Minneapolis were fairly static (and rarer due to not being that far north). These were very intense and shimmering. I could only guess that the fast variation in the patterns were due to the movement of the airplane (almost like moving across an interference pattern, but the light shouldn't be coherent so that doesn't make much sense). Anyway, was I just lucky to see that, or have you seen a similar sight from the air?
Shame that the North Pole is hot-footing it towards Russia, moving us here in North America further and further away from magnetic north and the northern lights.
Yes, I saw a big show about two years ago. The plane got to the southern tip of Iceland and Greenland. The auroras were exhibiting movement, although not so fast as to say they were dancing. The plane followed a single heading for a long time.
Peaking X3.4 at 0244z... HF propagation gone completely!.... Those that are flying at high altitude on the daylight side of Earth are receiving the equivalent of several powerful chest x-rays right now...heaven only knows what the shuttle crew and the international space station personal are getting if they are in daylight now. 73 ZL3JT
