Research from Wood's Hole is showing from sedimentary analysis that the slowing of the Gulf Stream corresponded to the "Little Ice Age" period in Europe. What still isn't clear is exactly why it slowed.

"The Gulf Stream carrying warm water to the North Atlantic slowed about 10 per cent in the Little Ice Age from 1200 to 1850, said a US study published on Wednesday that may give clues to the effects of modern global warming."......more ice skating there

I suppose some retard will bust in here shortly and call this  a hoax and liberal propaganda, even thought it comes from MIT and Woods Hole Institute of Oceanography.  I almost can't wait to be able to say "I told you so", but then again I enjoy visiting Europe when there isn't a half a mile of ice over the Berlin.

Coincidentally I heard last night that the Little Ice Age happened because of a decrease in sunspots. You can read more about that here: http://www.gsfc.nasa.gov/topstory/20011207iceage.html

BTW, I don't think that global warming is a hoax, only that WE aren't impacting it like some would like us to think.

Do you think it just might be possible that the solar activity was responsible for the slowing down of the gulf stream current? In other words, why can't you both be right?

To your last sentence: what are you going to do when it gets too hot to keep your head in the sand? It might be too late by then.

This is America.  Just turn up the air conditioning!  :-)

If he's right, it's already too late, because it means that the melting tundra is a tipping point that we can't do anything about.

Whether global warming is a theory bolstered up to gain grant money for research institutes, or it’s a real effect that humans are having on the climate of this planet is kind of irrelevant.  Cleaning any pollution (man made, or natural) out of the environment is simply beneficial to humans as a whole.

On a side note, I am personally sick and tired of listening to all the FUDD going around about Global Warming.  Next thing you know, I’ll be able to blame my hangovers on “Global Warming.”

What is unsettling is that we have empirical evidence that directly links the rise of C02 in the atmosphere with the last 7 ice ages.  Thousands of respected Oceanographers are convinced that the glacier which covered the area of the Great Lakes in the prior to the last ice age melted because of the rise of C02 levels, which then caused the disruption of the Northern Atlantic currents which feed heat to Europe.  Greenland's glaciers are the ticking bomb right now, because a melt off of it's ice could do the same thing.

There is a need to have a healthy amount of fear to push people into action.  Knowing the nature of humans, and the US in general, we will push off for the next decade what we don't want to do today.  I believe procrastination and apathy is what will eventually lead us all to our demise.  The so called "FUD" about Global Warming seems a lot more concrete and real to me than the FUD about Global Terrorism, especially after storms such as Dennis and Katrina.

I was right with you until your last paragraph.  We don't need fear.  We need knowledge.

Furthermore, every respectable climatologist will tell you that hurricanes such as Dennis and Katrina were statistical possibilities. By themselves they do not equal anything significant in terms of climate.  It was a matter of statistics.  There have been earlier hurricanes with equal destructive power,  even within the last century.  One particularly destructive storm season is not significant when discussing climate.  Note that the recently ended Hurricane season was very quiet.  Things do average out.

If you want to argue that global warming exists, I'll listen with great care.  However, if you point to those hurricanes and say that this is the direct result of global warming, I am going to ignore you because that is clearly an ignorant thing to say.  Ice cores, tree ring analysis, ocean temperature measurements, Carbon Dioxide measurements, and the like are all viable methods of determining climate in one area.  Are any of these conclusive?  No.  But the chance that all of these methods should pointing toward similar results does seem to be pretty damning.  My point is that there are reasonable people here who do disagree on some points.

However, to argue these points, you need honesty, fairness, understanding, healthy skepticism, and respect for those who disagree with you.  Calling the other side stupid, and citing widely discredited arguments won't help your cause one bit.
