A study at Ohio State University did experiments relating to the feasibility of using ultrasound to free mercury from sediments of waterways, and then used a genetically modified algae to absorb the mercury.

They hope one day their  process, ultrasound to free mercury, and  modified algae to absorb it, could be done on a large scale to clean  the sediments of waterways, from special dredging ships.  Either a process could clean sediments in place, or perhaps involve a separating of sediment from the algae on board and returning the sediments to the waterway floor.
