An interesting follow up to the previous wild wolf article, this one is about the non-endangered wolfdog hybrid population. There are a lot of them out there, but owners often find the adults a bit too much to handle. Here is one place where at least some of them can find refuge.

"What happens, finally, is you turn a corner – this one being deep in New Hampshire at the bottom of a frost-heaved dirt road over a Western ridge. There is a sign there, crude letters on simple planks. "Loki Clan Wolf Refuge," it says. And you turn that corner and then you see one. You see a wolf. Her name, you learn later, is Wayah. You're here to meet the man who saved her."..more big puppies there

I found this small website about the Loki Clan sanctuary, has a few more pictures and links for donations, etc. This guy must go through a lot of burger and chicken! Check the size of the wolfdogs next to him.

When I was in junior high, a good friend of mine had a neighbor next door that raced sled dogs, and he had some wolves he used for breeding into his dogs, so I guess those were wolfdogs, too. Again, large guys. The pure wolves though were kept in a cage when they weren't out that certainly appeared to be twice as strong as the dog's cages judging by the steel size. I am really guessing here, but probably closer than not to 200 lbs apiece. I know they were a lot bigger than me at the time. They'd stare at you and you can tell they were at least half contemplating lunch-lunch thoughts ;) heh

They were probably trying to stare you down and settle the dominance question, as opposed to deciding your edibility. Pepole who work with those animals will tell you to avoid eye contact when you're looking at them.

Another such rescuse facility, if you want to support them, is Wolfhave in Tenino WA. http://www.wolfhaven.org/.
