The Chinese Central Committee has released an extensive
national energy policy outline. In it they are proposing a
renewed emphasis on renewable energy in all the forms, but also a
heavy reliance on coal, because they have so much of it and need
every bit of energy they can get. Basically they plan on a lot
more of "all of the above", coal, oil, natural gas,
nuclear, hydroelectric, solar, wind and whatever else they can
come up with. Biofuels are not as important to them because they
need all the food they can get as well.
.."The basic themes of China's energy strategy give
priority to thrift, relying on domestic resources, encouraging
diverse patterns of development, relying on science and
technology, protecting the environment, and increasing
international cooperation for mutual benefit, the paper
says."..more background there. There is a link to the full

I'm going to have to say that if China doesn't get caught in the coal trap the US is in, and they don't use biofuels, then they're going to be scary scary scary. At least, in the sense of establishing a really viable array of energy technologies, while the western world sinks its load in biofuels and washes up.
