A new theory for finding that Melamine in the Wheat and now Corn Gluten is that supposedly the addition of this chemical boosts the protein count, making the gluten more economically valuable.

..."Chinese authorities have said the wheat gluten was an industrial product not meant for pet food, Sundlof said. Still, melamine can skew test results to make a product appear more protein-rich than it really is, he added. That raises the possibility the contamination was deliberate."...more follow the money there

Maybe completely off-topic, but I have a theory. If pet-doctors make a living of curing pets and make them fully healthy, they put themselves out of business right? What if people who sell pets only sell them once the previous pet died? The demand is far less then the provision. Not to speak about excesive overproduction of pets. So, if pharmaceutical producers could sell a lot to people who want to keep their dear pet alive? How would they poison these pets to become ill without nobody noticing? It is known that fixing a problem once and for all is not a healthy economical solution. The ever-lasting lightbulb / engine is dangerous. So are very healthy pets (or maybe even humans). Some businesses do want to have sick pets (or humans) around. Abusing pets is not the same as abusing humans. Abusing humans is inhumane, abusing pets is... I don't know. I don't abuse them. If pharmaceutical producers would ask petfood producers to put some difficult to trace poison into petfood and give them some money, pet-doctors would have a steady income. Same for petstores. And pharmaceutical companies make big bucks with selling medicines. I know, it is very paranoid and very conspiracy thinking. But hey, where big bucks are made, people can get blind and nasty. It doesn't sound to weird to me. I've seen worse practises just to make a buck or two. - Unomi -

Ask your local Human Society of abusing pets is considered humane.  [Hint: Their name should give you a clue.]

The risk isn't work the reward, period.  If a company were to get caught doing that, they would be put out of business by the lawsuits.  In many cases, criminal charges such as cruelty to animals would be brought.  Pets are very dear to people's hearts.  Executives would be jailed.

Good luck keeping it quiet with all the people who could possibly find out.

That seems very, very unlikely.

Pets generally are in huge oversupply -- not because of overbreeding by pet sellers but because of poor spaying/neutering practices.   Other than fancy bred animals -- a small part of the market -- pets are essentially free for the taking.   Those who pay a decent amount for bred animals are also those unlikely to buy inexpensive, mass-market pet food so events like the current ones aren't even going to help the breeders sell more.

Moreover, there isn't much need for sinister ways to degrade the health of the pet population:  owners do a pretty good job of that on their own because full-on veterinary care is prohibitively expensive for many owners.

With all due respect to China, as global trade helps developing economies become food exporters more and more, it shouldn't surprise us if we see a recapitulation of the lessons learned in The Jungle.

"That seems very, very unlikely."

Yes it does.

"Pets generally are in huge oversupply -- not because of overbreeding by pet sellers but because of poor spaying/neutering practices."

True, but you still need all the shots and what not even if you get the pet gratis.

"Those who pay a decent amount for bred animals are also those unlikely to buy inexpensive, mass-market pet food so events like the current ones aren't even going to help the breeders sell more."

What, do you think they cook for $500 to $1000 dogs? Not all of the recalled foods were el-cheapo brands were they? (Honestly can't remember.)

"With all due respect to China, as global trade helps developing economies become food exporters more and more, it shouldn't surprise us if we see a recapitulation of the lessons learned in The Jungle."

Not to mention the pollution we read about causing problems down the road if the stories are true.

all the best,

Except the steady stream of cats eating metal ribbons and requiring surgery, dogs chasing cars and catching them, and routine checkups are plenty to keep vets in business. And anyone primarily interested in money would recommend unnecessary procedures instead of poisoning pets, or better yet would choose human medicine in school.

Our late cat's vet taught us to do lots of things at home that they could have kept for themselves and charged for. Of course we did pick the best vet firm we could find so maybe the average is worse.
