The Delta Smelt, a fish on the endangered species list, is the
primary reason that huge pumps were
shut off this week that supply millions of Californians with
their primary fresh water supply. At issue is not only this one
fish, but the entire aquatic ecosystem around it which is in
decline as to health, and in the question how can man adequately
maintain and use the resources in the environment, when that
imperils some of the flora and fauna? Man needs the resources to
live, but can't use them without inflicting some harm, it is
just inevitable. The rest of nature needs the resources, and
can't live without them remaining in a rather untouched by
man state. Seems a catch 22 problem, one with huge economic and
environmental questions attached to it, and a lot of people are
trying to sort this out now and come to a consensus that they can
all agree on, including the defenders of the fish.
.." To protect a little fish that grows about 2 inches long,
lives one year and smells like cucumbers, officials this week
shut down a set of massive water pumps that keeps one of the
world's biggest economies humming."....more, pretty hard
to have it both ways, there
This has been an issue forever. SoCal needs the water but the people in the SF Bay Area get absolutely no benefit from sending the water down there except higher taxes and a messed up delta system. Folks in SoCal don't even try to conserve water and build new housing developments like its going out of style so there is an ever increasing demand for water. My favorite new tactic they've come up with in the rhetoric war is claiming Arizonians are stealing their water from the Colorado River, pretty funny if you ask me. So if this thing sticks the only real option is to take more water out of the Colorado and have some interstate water battles. Ought to get interesting.
I live in the mid-West / mid-Atlantic region . We have hot summers, cold winters, lots of rain and snow.
We put up with a climate that isn't SoCal. But we have plenty of water (3 rivers in my town.) We don't have hurricanes, either.
I say, if you don't want to deal with water shortages, don't move to the desert. But if you live in a desert, don't suck off another region until its dry just because you like the lifestyle.
