China has followed
through on the death sentence of a former director of its
food and drug agency. He was executed today.
Zheng's death sentence was unusually severe even for China,
which is believed to carry out more court-ordered executions than
all other nations combined, and indicates the communist
leadership's determination to confront the country's dire
product safety record.
Zheng, 63, was convicted of taking cash and gifts worth $832,000
when he was in charge of the food and drug agency.
He was sentenced to death on May 29 and his appeal was rejected
on June 12 by the Higher People's Court of Beijing.
China's Supreme Court approved the sentence, saying Zheng
"committed vile crimes and caused extreme harm to
society."
I hope this is more than just for show. I hope it does FAR more than indicate determination to confront the dire product safety record- I hope it's just the first of many executions.
Let's hope they do spammers next, and let's hope the U.S. follows it's own example and allows extradition of spammers who have never set foot nor server in China. (OK, maybe not that latter part...)

List production of spam by volume and it's an interesting story. U.S. is number one (w0h00...oh wait, er, that's bad) with 20% of the spam, then China with 7.5%, then Poland 7.4% (yow! for such a relatively small country compared to #1and 2), followed by S. Korea and Italy
By continent it's Europe, Asia, then South America.
Note however that's not "production of spam" but "spam relaying countries". I think the proportion done on behalf of US clients would be rather higher, though of course the whole point is to obfuscate he source.
