1985 Toyota Supra
1988 Toyota Supra
1990s Mazda RX-7
BMW M3 - you pick a year, but I also like to think about the all wheel drive 325ix from time to time, too.
Subaru made some nice candidates, I guess.
Volvo 740 w/ Turbo Intecooler and 4-speed w/Overdrive.
Plymouth Valiant - Dodge Dart - any random year.
Lincoln mark III
1970 Caddy Eldo 500 cu. front wheel drive.
Some of those big SUVs have some nice engines in 'em if you want to deal with a 454, think it is. Or International had a v-12 ages ago, think that was the 50s..
Any car list for me to play with could never be complete, ive seen some old ugly ones that I would love to start up and take for a spin. The lady and I have talked about some project cars so thats why some of these are a little odd or not exactly within the spirit of the article. The 1970 Eldorado would be a fun project to possibly convert to all wheel drive but keep the big 8.2l powerplant.
Yes she is a gearhead and can turn wrenches just fine.
I guess it all depends on what kind of car you like, too. I drive a 5 speed Saturn sedan. A little two door car with rear wheel drive is not really what I am used to but I drove an 85 Supra when dad was not looking. I just really would like enough horsepower to enjoy myself, nothing like some of the cars ive read about recently (600+ HP, esh...). The Eldo is just an idea but I laugh about it a little.
I drove around in a friends Chevy Citation often and it would hit 100 mph on the very rare occasions it was pushed that far. I guess someone out there will get all hot and heavy for one, slam it to the ground and put huge wagon wheel dubs on it and paint it and weld on a wing.
Or put a huge engine in front and one in back, or give it a 4x4 setup. Its all a matter of taste or lack of it I guess.
Today I was in town and saw a black 4x4 VW Bug with a 350 in it.
There was also a car get-together here so I saw some very nice rides, Chevy Bel-airs, GTOs, Corvette Stingrays, a deep metallic green Grand Torino, and a very incredible 61 Impala painted a deep red.
A local mechanic has an old Rivera (65 or so) and a 62 Impala parked around the shop often. I like those two cars, but that red 61 Impala was just sickeningly sweet.
Do you guys read Jalopnik.com? They are really into cars on that site, obscure cars are their bread and butter. I read about the Ferrari 288 in their fantasy garage. What a neat car! 272 made too, to compete with the Porsche 959.
I really like that 1986-ish BMW 325ix, so I vote for that as my cult car for now.....I dig those all wheel drive models.
The BMW E30s (especially the E30 M3) will be classics. The 325/325e/325es less so, but as it is easy and common to get a head from a 325i and get a lot of power out of those, even they will be. But those cars (except the late 318i's) are not today's cars. They were 70s and early 80s technology very well done. They are already 20 years old.
My list:
Mazda Miata - What the MG would have been if they kept at it.
Subaru Impreza (especially WRX/STI)
BMW Z3 and Z4
Saab 93 Viggen
2000-2005 Audi A4/S4, A6/S6
VW Rabbit
I'm sure there will be some American cars, because enough car guys refuse to like foreign cars, but as of late, they have no soul. (The American cars I mean, not the American car guys.)
