OpenMoko Developer Preview Sold Out After Unexpected Demand

OpenMoko, the first Open Source cell phone, has sold out the entire planned production run for the device's developer preview after unexpected demand. No more units until September 10, when they can finish another production run. Some significant number of people seem to have purchased an OpenMoko phone knowing that the software's not up to basic usability yet, and that they will be expected to help it get there. This when they could have gone down to the Apple store for an iPhone. I guess they really like the "open" aspect.

I'm busy, alas, enough that it's probably best to wait for the production hardware.

Well, if I had more sense, I would have too  ;)

If I can get v1 just making phone calls, it'll be good enough for me to use as my everyday phone.

I was as much intent on supporting the initiative by purchasing v1 as any other reason.  I'm expecting to pick up the v2 phone later this year also... again, mostly to throw my support to the project.  My hacking skills don't fall lower on the abstraction chain than Java, so I'm afraid I'm not much help at this point with the openmoko development itself.  Maybe later, though...

Well, I do have a Motorola Linux phone already. It's just not Open Source enough.

... which is exactly what I wanted to avoid when it came time to replace my flaky Treo 650.  In order to avoid the several new "Linux" closed phones, I went as far as searching for a CF-based GPRS card so I could turn my Zaurus into a phone... apparently I'm the only idiot that thought of such a thing, because I didn't find anything at all.

So, openmoko came around just in time for my situation, though I have been waiting many months now since my Treo died.

I bought an audiovox card to do just that once. It didn't work. There was some undocumented quirk to the interface. Anyway, the battery life would have been horrid.

I am saving my pennies so I can buy a V2 phone this December.  It is my Christmas present to myself.  Plus I need a phone that isn't stuck in the 90's.

Can't wait to see what other models they come out with for next year also.

This when they could have gone down to the Apple store for an iPhone.

Ugh, yeah, and they could cut off their feet and not worry about stubbing their toe.
