The San Francisco Chronicle Online has, to my surprise, a column
called Open
Source Sex. This does not portray the sex of Open Source
developers - you can insert the obligatory joke about us not
getting any here. It's putting out in the open discussions
about sex, including some rather kinky stuff. Recent content
included "how to have sex like a porn star". Which
doesn't sound very fun. Warning: adult content at that link,
some of you will find this very offensive.
Open Source is a term which apparently has acquired some degree of appeal. It's no longer just hippies talking about it. When others build new definitions around the term, you know it has some staying power.
The attractiveness of open source is that you can sample a person's abilities before you hire them by looking at their open source achievements. This helps HR and engineering in many companies make sure they're not hiring a well certified idiot for a high profile job.
So, here we are with a column on sex. And what paradigm does the author borrow from? Open Source! She's been writing books and blogs about it for some time.
Well, those are her credentials. They're a matter of, umm, open source.
my juvenile brain couldn't help doing some word replacements of a part of your post in regards to Open Source Sex:
"The attractiveness of Open Source Sex is that you can sample a person's abilities before you get in a relationship with them by looking at their Open Source Sex achievements. This helps partner seekers make sure they're not paring with a merely bragging idiot for high-sexual-tension release jobs."
Isn't it redundant to call it "Open Source Sex"? What's closed source, proprietary sex like anyway?
Or are the exhibitionists all right, that the only way to really do it is to do it out in the open where everyone can see? Would you let people give you tips, offer patches, find bugs, etc?
Ok, so, yeah, it's neat that another fringe community likes the phrase "Open Source".
There are unfortunately a lot of patented toys out there, some of which do have bugs. Thre are other people out there working on these problems, though! Some are more active than others... the Slashdong blog is an interesting thing to read at times!
There's also a wiki with some outside sources at the bottom, including the lovely VioletBlue's column.
I'm not associated with any of these people, but I do think it's neat.
Open Source Sex
You know a term has permeated society when...
