Four complete families of beavers
that were trapped in Norway have arrived in the UK where they
will remain in quarantine for six months then be released in a
trial in Scotland to try and reintroduce them. They were
completely hunted out four hundred years ago there and the
various conservation organizations want to reintroduce them to
help provide more balanced wetlands.
ed.z.: I like beavers, they are pretty neat animals, even more
impressive if you are diving and they come up real close to check
you out underwater. BIG guys, around medium chunky dog size or
so. I hope the folks there in Scotland won't be too annoyed,
though, when they see how many trees they decide to drop, they
are *relentless*. We have some in all the ponds here and you look
around the banks, there are hundreds of trees down or will be
down soon from their "work", they just do not stop
gnawing.
not just cutting the trees, but can cause some significant
flooding with their damns (pardon the play on words). Beavers
washed out a dirt road I used quite regularly just this past
summer.
