Food Stamps hit record high in Oregon
Warning: Oregonlive (The Oregonian Newspaper) link. I know there's been some problems with that in the past.
Amid the worsening economy, Oregon has now hit a new record number of Oregonians on the food stamp program.
Just doing a rough estimation from the numbers in this article and the estimated population of Oregon found in google, ~15% of Oregon is now on direct food assistance from the State. In addition to that, the private food bank charity system, which is supposed to handle the gap between either food stamps and food security or working payroll and food security, is seeing record numbers of families coming in for boxes.
Add to that a major winter storm encouraging panic buying among those who can afford food, combined with fewer food shipments getting throught the snow and ice; and we've got some bare cupboards in Oregon- in both homes and retail for Christmas.
