A nice preview of the Fedora 9
which will be released tomorrow. A lot of choices and a lot of
new features, live USB boot option with persistence, option for
Ext 4 file system and encrypted partitions, KDE 4 available, etc.
update: released, Fedora 9 download page.
.."The Fedora team has clearly spent a lot of time trying to
refine some of the smaller, but perhaps more common user
interface elements in some thoughtful ways. Take, for instance,
the new setting that allows you to manage power settings from the
login screen. It's a small tweak but it makes shutting down
simple. There's no need to login when you wake from hibernate
- just shut down straight from the login screen. Similar
attention to these basics can be found throughout the new
release."
ed.z.: Well, have fun tomorrow you lucky fatpipes guys...I am
relying on mule train delivery, one of each of the Gnome and KDE
live offerings..
I have been using gentoo nearly exclusively since a few months after it's founding, with the exception of my BSD installs. I've lost some patience with a few matters and am looking to try something new. How does Fedora compare to the ohh-so popular Ubuntu? And do any of these all encryption during the installation? I take my disk encryption seriously and absoltely require it. I helped bring dm-crypt and loop encryption to Gentoo and am not afraid to get dirty, it's just easier if it's there in the install.
Sorry about delay in replying, spaced out. Anyway, I already ordered the gnome version, we'll see how that goes when it shows up. I understand a lot of guys are having probs with nvidia cards, which is what I have, so I will wait and see how the livna updates work out. I may actually just go for the fedora 8 respin instead with all the updates. Or...dunno yet. I keep wanting to build a more secure and easier to use internet appliance thing that runs all from RAM, in that case I'll need a way smaller distro, probably have to make it custom myself..
