The United Nations Billion Trees Campaign has far surpassed their original goal, with recently passing the two billion mark. Noting the effectiveness and enthusiasm for the project, they are expanding it to seven billion trees, more than one per person on the planet, before a big climate conference in 2009.

.."In terms of geographic distribution, Africa is the leading region with over half of all tree plantings. Regional and national governments organized the most massive plantings, with Ethiopia leading the count at 700 million, followed by Turkey (400 million), Mexico (250 million), and Kenya (100 million)."

ed.z.: All right! It's always a good time to plant a tree, even if you are only sprouting that avocado pit from last night's guacamole. Amd if you follow the dual use/preparedness concept, you can help green the planet and also get some practical benefits within a few years with ye olde food budget. Baby trees from the various mail order places are *cheap*, plant a tree, eventually get some fruit or nuts. Drop a Jackson on some baby trees this year, three years from now you'll go nice...

If I get that house I've been aiming at, I'll be sure to buy a tree. Maybe two.
