Jellyfish Jam Up the Oceans

Oceans around the world are experiencing rapid jellyfish population blooms. As regular fish are taken in ever increasing quantities, jellyfish numbers expand to fill ecological niches.

"Jellyfish both compete with fish for plankton food, and predate directly on fish," explains Andrew Brierley from the University of St Andrews in Scotland. "It is hard, therefore, to see a way back for fish once jellyfish have become established, even if commercial fishing is reduced." ed.z.: Jellybiodieselfish? Must be some way to turn this into an asset...and having worked a trawler two summers, I can assure you is is pretty easy to catch a boatload full of jellyfish..especially when you don't want to..

I don't know enough about the anatomy of Jellyfish to know one way or the other.  I do know though that some species are potentially valuable in the pharmaceutical industry if we could just figure out how to control dosages properly.  Anything that is THAT active on mammals and fish alike, is a pretty powerful poison that might be hiding medicine.

they're over 95% water, for a biofuel feedstock they're thus mostly a waste of space.
