The baobab tree nut, or fruit, has been approved in at least one form for consumption in Europe, as an ingredient for smoothies and in dry nutrition bars. Being non native it had to meet regulatory approval first. Supposedly it is not only tasty, but extremely high in vitamin c and calcium content.

Gus Le Breton, the association's chief executive, said: "The EU decision is a crucial step to developing the global market which could be worth up to £500m a year. ed.z.: Anyone ever eat any of this? Here's a little more, wiki entry for baobab I think that internal drought proofing water storage is pretty neat.

Baobab fruit has an interesting taste. And texture. I do come from that part of the world and have eaten the fruit on occasion. What does it taste like? Have you ever tasted cream of tartar? That will give you a good idea.

It is more of a sour tart taste, rather than the sweet taste normally associated with fruit.

There are all sorts of other interesting fruit from Southern Africa, most of which are unlikely to make it over here. One I would love to see in the shops is Marula fruit. Great taste, and makes very good wine / beer - done surreptitiously and carefully at boarding school. You had to vent the bottles regularly, otherwise they would explode. :) Highly alcoholic at the end of it all. Ah, the folly of youth.

The liqueur Amarula cream, while rather pleasant, does not taste anything much like the Marula fruit. Unfortunately.
