Japan is well known for electronic innovation, and one area where
the gee whizz factor is high is with some of their
cellphones. Unfortunately, most of this tech is never found
outside of Japan. That should be changing shortly as a new push
to export this tech has been started.
Although Japan boasts some of the most sophisticated cell
phones in the world, delivering high-speed Internet connections,
digital TV broadcasts and video downloads, the nation has failed
to make its handsets, wireless technology and mobile services
hits outside of Japan. ed.z.: One day, some company is going
to develop a cellphone with an astounding number of advanced
features, except reality will slip through the cracks and they
will forget the actual "telephone" part...
Paul Krugman recently made an observation linking our current
globalization with one that happened in the late 1890s- the
British Empire. Americans today, like the mythical Londoner
Sir Keynes wrote about, can have almost all the products of the
world delivered with just a phone call- and in return, can invest
anywhere in the world.
The Internet is just a better phone, in this respect.
Maybe, though, it's time to do to Japan what Japan did to the
United States- go there, buy specific pieces of their technology,
come back here, reverse engineer them, and release them to the
general public.
However, I fear it will all end just like the British Empire did-
in disaster for every country ever colonized by them.
